CELEBRATING STUDENT SUCCESS
In this section of the site, we highlight some of
the successes and achievements of our students.
TDI Challenge
National Final
This is a prestigious national event in which students present their
projects to be judged by a panel who are looking for high levels of creativity,
innovation, presentational and entrepreneurial skills.
3rd place - Sarah Needham
Young Engineer for
Britain - South West Regional Final
'Young Engineers' is a UK educational charity whose purpose is to inspire young
people to recognise the importance and excitement of a career in engineering.
They have a network of over 1600 science, engineering and technology clubs
around the UK and are home to Young Engineers for Britain, the largest
Engineering, Design and Technology Competition for school students in Europe
Young Engineers take students out of the
classroom and into the real world. Through entering the Young Engineers for
Britain competition students find themselves working with teachers and other
students who share their interests in a friendly and informal environment. They
meet and work with professional engineers on projects that have real
significance. They experience all the elements of the engineer's job -
identifying needs, analysing problems, conducting research, developing a
specification, and making and testing the product.
2nd place - Peter Birtles
Other Finalists - Stuart King, Thomas Lloyd, Nicholas Donnelly
Wessex Setpoint Innovation
Awards 2005
These awards stimulate students to
produce creative solutions to scientific project briefs. This year the projects
include; ‘Blooming Biospheres’, ‘Clock of the Titans’, ‘How clean is your
house?’, ‘Funky future fashion’, ‘Cool Clocks’, ‘Eating in extremes’ and ‘Get
Creative’. This initiative culminates in a prestigious celebration held during
National Science week to which all entrants are invited. Students set up a
displays and talk about their project to professional scientists and engineers
who judge each project against the assessment criteria. The day has science
shows and ‘hands-on’ activities for students.
CREST Awards
CREST stands for 'Celebrating CREativity in Science
and Technology'
BA CREST is a nationally recognized accreditation scheme for project work in the
fields of science and technology. Aimed at students aged 11-19, BA CREST awards
encourage students to develop their scientific curiosity, problem-solving and
communication skills.
Through a mentoring system, the scheme facilitates links between schools and
industry or higher education. It enables students of all abilities to explore
real scientific, engineering and technological problems for themselves and
promotes work-related learning.
